Antioxidants are molecules (groups of atoms, the basic units of chemical elements) which help prevent damage by neutralising the energy of harmful, oxidative molecules known as free radicals.

In the treatment of rosacea, antioxidants have been formulated into useful forms for the skin.

When applied to the skin, antioxidants can prevent damage to skin caused by the inflammation characteristic of rosacea, reducing the prevalence of erythema (redness), pimples, papules and pustules.

In addition, antioxidants can counteract the harm initiated by environmental factors such as the sun (when used in conjunction with sunscreen) and pollution, helping prevent the signs of aging, particularly photoaging.

Antioxidants are therefore helpful in preventing losses in skin's elasticity, reductions in firmness and the development of fine lines, age spots and uneven skin tone.

General public consensus has been that antioxidants may reverse aging, however theoretically antioxidants can only prevent rather than reverse damage. This effect may nevertheless give the appearance of reversed aging.

Antioxidants are numerous and include all manner of natural and synthetic molecules.

The most effective antioxidants are highly unstable due to their willingness to combine with and neutralise oxidants.

Effective antioxidant products contain high concentrations of antioxidants and will have short shelf-lives.

For this reason, we ask that you use The Clinic's products within four months of opening and store them below the temperature indicated on the label and away from direct light.

The highest concentration of antioxidants is found in the Anti-Inflammatory Clearing Serum.

Although this serum is applied at night, it's effects are protracted over several days as the antioxidants cannot be washed or rubbed off once absorbed.

It is also desirable that antioxidant products be used as soon after manufacture as possible (for this reason all patient products are prepared to order).

Some of the most noteworthy antioxidants for rosacea include the following:

In the last decade, properly formulated and stable antioxidant technologies have become a substantial addition to the dermatological armamentarium against rosacea, helping manage most aspects of the disease at all stages while also having genuine anti-aging properties.
